Did I read this right or was I hallucinating?Apparently, there is a practice, known as placentophagy, where the woman's placenta is dried, emulsified and placed in gelatin capsules to be taken by the mother after the birth of her child. By some, this peculiar remedy is thought to relieve postpartum depression, but is not well received by medical experts. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and FDA are not too keen on the idea either, and would need to see clinical studies before a medical claim could ever be made; although, it seemed to work for the woman in this article who has had a history of suffering.
My favorite quote from the article: “I feel that it is what we as women are meant to do with the placenta,” says Jodi Selander of Las Vegas. Well I don't know about you, but I don't think I will be jumping on her bandwagon anytime soon...just can't stomach the thought. Yuck!
