The recommended weight gain guidelines for pregnant women may be changing. At this time, women with “normal” BMI's are encouraged to gain between 25 and 35 pounds. For those who are obese, 15 pounds is suggested. Women who are considered underweight should gain up to 40 lbs.
However, doctors are saying that the guidelines mentioned above aren't accurate for today's obesity problems. Pregnant women are gaining too much weight they say, putting themselves and their babies at risk.
Would lowering the weight gain guidelines make any difference? I doubt that it would. If they do decide to lower the guidelines, there should also be more support to educate pregnant women about healthier habits and how to stay within the recommendations. Otherwise, don't bother...
