Last Sunday, a tragic event on the playing field left Buffalo Bills tight end, Kevin Everett motionless with a fracture and dislocation of the spinal cord. Dr. W. Dalton Dietrich, scientific director for the Miami Project, a spinal cord program affiliated with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, along with millions of other T.V. viewers witnessed the tragic play unfold.
A quick move by Dr. Dietrich may have changed the outcome of Evertt’s prognosis. Dietrich emailed the neurosurgeon team responsible for Kevin Everett’s care in Buffalo...a new medical play was made. An experimental treatment was introduced in the ambulance on the way to the hospital; it involved introducing a cooled saline solution into Kevin Everett’s body, lowering his body temperature. The cooled tissue requires less oxygen, reduces the metabolic rate and potentially helps reduce swelling around the damaged spinal cord.
Seeing Everett’s injury, doctors were not initially optimistic that the Buffalo Bills player would ever walk again. Now, Everett is moving his fingers and toes and doctors are hopeful he will walk his way to fame.
