Eggs have the most dietary cholesterol of all the commonly eaten foods. I am sure we have all heard news lately that eggs are not good for us and we should not eat too many of them. But then again we have all seen the “Incredible Edible Egg” commercials on T.V. too, touting the health benefits of the egg. So which is it?

Dr. Walter Willett, a famous Harvard University Nutritionist, says, “Dietary cholesterol has been greatly oversold as a health concern, in part because it has a small effect on blood cholesterol levels...some of the foods that contain high cholesterol, such as eggs, have many other healthy components.” We now know the biggest influence on the blood's cholesterol levels is the amount and kind of fats in the diet, not the amount of dietary cholesterol in your food.

The biggest problem with cutting eggs out of your diet is the kind of foods some of us choose to replace them with. Foods like bagels and cream cheese, muffins and pastries offer much less nutrition than eggs and can affect our blood cholesterol levels much more negatively than eggs.

The bottom line...“Everything in moderation” is still the Nutritionists’ mantra!
