Killer Lips
Just when you thought all you need to worry about was food safety, here comes the latest news! It is lead poisoning, found in everyday items such as lipsticks and toys. With the latest recalls from China about lead found in the paint used on toys, now you need to shift your focus to your cosmetic bag. Does your favorite lipstick meet the safety standards?A U.S. consumer rights group tested some popular brands of lipstick and found 61% had detectable lead levels. The lipsticks in question included Cover Girl, L'Oreal and Christian Dior. So, why should we be concerned since the amounts detected were in the parts per million? Well, we tend to lick our lips after applying our lipsticks and glosses. Some of the side effects that might be caused by long term exposure to lead include learning, language and behavioral problems.
According to the cosmetic companies, the amount of lead ingested by licking your lips is less than if you eat it, breath it or drink it. The Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association also stated that lead is “naturally present and not intentionally added.” However, there are ways to make lead-free lipsticks, so there is really no excuse.
Just as you are careful in choosing the foods you eat according to their safety, the same applies to our lipsticks. Think of your little girl the next time she wants to play dress up and wants to use your cosmetics...consider the safer, more budget-friendly brands such as Revlon.
