It's that wonderful time of the year...lots of parties, platters of food everywhere, but can you enjoy the party without going up a size or two before the season is through? When it comes to the many get togethers this holiday season affords us, psychologists at the University of Toronto have noted that regardless of how hungry we are, social cues dictate our food intake, which is usually too much. People eat more when they’re with a group, even in groups as small as two people can eat as much as 30 to 50% more than when eating alone.

Like most things in life, here too the recommendation is moderation. Keep tabs on calorie intake. Remember, beverages count! Never go to the party hungry. Don’t deprive yourself of the things you love. Do be mindful of the portions being enjoyed. Compliment those caloric endeavors with more healthy choices.

One party during the season shouldn’t tip the scale terribly. However, multiple parties within the time frame of the holiday season could easily cause you to pack on 4 to 5 lbs.

Eat and drink responsibly, and have a very happy and healthy holiday!
