So what can you do right now about breast cancer? Plenty! We've listed organizations to which you can donate and inspirational stories you can share with friends and family.

However, the most important thing you can do is learn what steps you can take to reduce breast cancer risk, and follow your health care professional's recommendation on getting regular mammography screenings.

Getting Screened
Mammograms are the first-line defense against breast cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, mammograms can detect potential breast cancer one to three years before a woman can feel them during a self-test. This early detection can catch the cancer before it can spread. Caught this early, the five-year survival rate is 98 percent.

Currently, the American Cancer Society recommends mammograms each year for women over 40. However, women with higher risk factors should talk with their doctor about whether to get more frequent screening or screenings at an earlier age.

Be sure to talk with your health care professional about when and how often you should schedule mammography screenings.
