Planning for alcohol
Alcohol can be enjoyed safely by most people with diabetes, provided a few guidelines are followed.

First, check with your doctor and make sure it is safe for you to drink. If so, it is essential to stay within the recommended daily limit for alcohol which is less than two drinks per day for men and less than one drink per day for women.

One drink is equal to about 100 calories and is defined as: 5 ounces of wine, 12 ounces of beer (preferably light varieties which have less carbohydrate), or 1 1/2 ounces of distilled spirits (scotch, rum, gin, vodka).

Always consume alcohol with a meal or snack to avoid unexpected low blood glucose reactions (hypoglycemia) and be sure to check your blood glucose before you drive, even if you have only had one drink. If you choose to drink, drink in moderation and drink responsibly.
