Running a Marathon... Am I Crazy?!?
By Dorian WagnerSenior Copy Editor
I've never been a "runner." I think the farthest I've ever even tried to run was a couple miles... and that was back in high school, because my volleyball coach said I had to.
So I have no idea how it got in my head that I wanted to run a marathon (26.2 miles!), but it did, and I LOVE IT.
I've been training for the Fort Lauderdale A1A Marathon for about five months now. I'm following a six-month program which starts out very slowly and encouraging -- my first time out, I only had to run/walk for 30 minutes. You gradually add miles (and drop the walking) as time goes by.
Every Saturday morning, I have to do a "long run," which gets longer every week. And when I say long, I mean loooooong. My first long run was only set at 3 miles, which I still thought was a little crazy at the time. I'd never run 3 miles in my life! But I did it. And it was awesome. The feeling of accomplishment I had at the end was enough to make me look forward to the next Saturday.
Last weekend I ran 20 miles. In one day. One morning.
You read that right. And that's why I sometimes wonder if I'm crazy. But in the same second, I always realize I'm not.
I love running now. It's put me back in the shape I was in in high school. It gives me a reason to get up every morning and get moving. It gives me something to look forward to, something that has great meaning to me.
I'm running a marathon. It's something most people will never do in their lives. It's something I can talk about with enthusiasm, with accomplishment, with pride. And when it's all said and done, and I cross that finish line exhausted and overjoyed, I won't just be Dorian Wagner anymore... I'll be Dorian Wagner, Marathon Runner.
P.S. My marathon is February 17. Be sure to check back and I'll post how I did! And in the meantime, check me out in our podcast (I'm the one with the squash, which I can't really explain. It was just there on the desk, so I picked it up.)

My 56 year old son-in-law did a triathlon in June, 2007 and finished. He had only trained for 1 year.
If he can do it I know YOU can.
Good Luck!

These recipes are great, but how about giving us seniors the option of making a lesser amount with a serving size calculator.

I find the long runs are a great personal ritual time. You have to prepare all week for the long run, get your gear ready, then you are off to solve all the worlds problems in your head while your on the road injoying the senery~
my Mantra~ Mind over matter and just finish vertically~Have a great time!!!
YOU CAN DO WHAT EVER YOU SET YOUR MIND TO DO!

Go Girl! I know what you mean about just running 3 miles. I ran my first 5K summer of 2007 at the age of 55. I also had stopped smoking early that summer after 34 years of the habit. There were only two in my age group--but I won first place. Boy did I ever feel great. Like you, never ran in my life--but boy what a high I get when I do. Good luck to you and I'll be thinking of you on run day.

Wow Girl!!! That is so exciting and refreshing to hear! Just make sure to stay healthy! I was training for my first and now I have a million things wrong with my foot, a stress fracture, loss of cartilage, joint probs, and bone marrow edema. Run it for me since I can't even workout!!! I'll stay updated on ya!

You will be successful without a doubt!! You've shared your goal publically...and I mean publically. One of the keys to succesfully acheiving your goals.
I just ran my first 1/2 Marathon at the Phoenix Rock & Roll. I admire you for going the whole distance.

You rock! I ran my first marathon in L.A. for my son's first birthday back in 2006. I just got some girlfriends to commit to do the Rock n Roll marathon in Phoenix January 09. Like you I'm not a runner AT ALL. But I can tell you it feel SOOOOO good to cross that finish line. Most people will never achieve that and YOU WILL.

You crossed my path this morning as I was going to the beach. It was approximately 8:30am, mile 13, on Bay street, Hillsboro Shores. You were moving like the breeze, with confidence and a smile... Joie de vivre!

You Go Dorian!
Follow your dream. I was training to run my 1st marathon in 2001, but I broke my foot. My dream and goal is still to run my 1st marathon. If I can't run the whole 26.2 miles, I just want to make it across the finish line. Please update me on your 1st marathon. I'm looking for a training partner in Houston, Texas
