Random Food Trivia Quiz -- Answers!

Here are the answers to our Random Food Trivia Quiz. If you didn't already take the quiz, click here to get it (before you read the answers... No cheating!)
1. When first created, Coca-Cola was originally:
d. Green! Ew... Nothing like a slime-colored, carbonated drink to quench your thirst. (Editor's note: All right... they got us! Coca-Cola was originally packaged in green bottles, but the actual drink was still brown. Thanks to everyone who pointed this out.)
2. Despite common belief, when you eat lobster or shrimp "tails," you're not actually eating the tail. You're eating:
c. The abdomen -- The real "tail" is actually the inedible fins at the end. Also, that "vein" that runs down the back of shrimp tails isn't really a vein -- it's intestine!
3. Which of these foods actually contains negative calories?
c. Celery -- Celery actual contains zero calories, so you actually use more calories simply chewing it than you take in! If you ask us, there should be more foods like this...
4. Americans eat 18 acres of this every day:
c. Pizza! That's roughly equal to 13.5 football fields. Makes us wonder just how many slices...
5. True/False: Drinking ice water burns more Calories than un-chilled water.
a. True -- You use about 17.5 Calories just bring a cup of ice water up to body temperature. So if you drink the recommended 8 glasses a day iced, you could burn an extra 70 calories!
6. The combination of wintergreen, vanilla and cassis (a form of cinnamon) make up this commonly recognized flavor:
b. Bubblegum -- The vanilla part doesn't really surprise us, but who knew those sugary sweet pink bubblegum sticks actually had wintergreen and cinnamon-flavors in them?!
7. Put the five most popular ice cream flavors in order from 1 to 5 (1 being the most popular):
1. Vanilla; 2. Chocolate; 3. Butter pecan; 4. Strawberry; 5. Neapolitan. Other popular flavors: Chocolate Chip was #6, Cookies & Cream was #8 and Rocky Road ranked all the way down at #14.
8. Men crave food high in fat; women crave:
d. Chocolate --Shocking, we know. We're guessing "that time of the month" probably skews the results...
9. On average, it takes about 345 squirts:
a. From a cow's udder to make a gallon of milk. That's a lot of work for your morning moo juice!
10. True/False: A jelly doughnut has fewer calories than a plain sugared ring doughnut.
a. True -- While the regular ring doughnut may seem like less food, it has a greater surface area, meaning more of it is exposed to the oil than a whole round jelly one. More surface exposed to the frier = more calories!
11. The U.S. has the largest fast food market in the world. Which country comes in second?
d. China -- Takee Outee, anyone? (Editor's note: This was a joke, made in reference to a restaurant I used to frequent went I was in Gainesville at the University of Florida. There are also a similar ones in Jacksonville and Palm Harbor.)
12. In the movie Psycho, by Alfred Hitchcock, what was used for the bloody shower scene?
b. Chocolate syrup -- The 45-second shower scene, which actually took 7 days to shoot, used chocolate syrup for the blood, a common film trick used in black and white movies. Death by chocolate? Yes, please.

Vera,
You just need to compare your answers with what the answers are up there. The computer won't "do" it for you; you just see the answer page.

The answer to #11 is offensive: "Takee Outee" ?!?! Please stop the Asian-bashing!
Comment by - Wednesday, May 21, 2008 6:18:00 PM
was surprised at the bubblegum one, and also because I thought cassis is black current not cinnamon.
Comment by - Wednesday, June 04, 2008 10:45:00 PM
Me, too and what was with the "that time of the month" skewing the answers?
Comment by - Wednesday, June 04, 2008 11:23:00 PM
Very cool! I missed 4 of them. I run a variety of "Life Skills" educational groups for adults with psychiatric disabilities, and we always have tons of fun with these sorts of quizzes...plus, they are (unknowingly;) learning some great facts in the process! KUDOS!

#11
Really?!! Takee Outee is extremely offensive. No editor on staff?!
Comment by - Thursday, June 05, 2008 2:00:00 AM
To the people offended by the Takee outee comment..... It was a JOKE!!!!! I am Australian and people make fun of my accent every day - I am proud to be different and if we have to be so careful not to offend anyone because they are a little different - then what's the point?? - DIFFERENT DOES NOT MEAN BAD!!!!! You people should get over it and celebrate (and sometimes smile) at our differences!!!!!!
Comment by - Thursday, June 05, 2008 2:56:00 AM
I was so taken aback by "Takee Outee" that I actually sat up and said, "Whoa...can that be?" when I read the answer. I would think a site that's so enlightened and forward thinking would know that such a phrase is not only offensive but serves to alienate members that have been loyally using the site for a long time. Be smart, use basic common courtesy (not to mention sense), and remove this from the quiz.
Comment by - Thursday, June 05, 2008 5:50:00 AM
no self respecting Asian would say takee outee. This is ignorant American bashing (again). Lighten up people.
Comment by - Thursday, June 05, 2008 7:16:00 AM
"Takee Outee" is definitely offensive. Quit it.
The Chocolate syrup answer surprised me. I also got the ice cream flavours and the coke colour wrong. It was a fun quiz and an eye opener too.
Comment by - Thursday, June 05, 2008 7:56:00 AM
Question # 11 was not intended to be offinsive..Just Funny. Learn to Lighten UP!!
Comment by - Thursday, June 05, 2008 7:57:00 AM
This is kind of a silly test...Cute, but I'd be curious to see the sources used to verify the answers. Some of this stuff I've read conflicting things about
(e.g., I've read that the margin of additional calories burned by drinking ice water is just miniscule). I also think using played out racial stereotypes for Chinese Americans is lame.
Comment by - Thursday, June 05, 2008 8:26:00 AM
The ice water fact is good to know. Im big on un chilled water...not anymore! thanks~
Comment by - Thursday, June 05, 2008 8:48:00 AM
I only got one wrong,, the ice cream flavors, I switched butter pecan and strawberry. I am a wealth of ramdom info!!!
Comment by - Thursday, June 05, 2008 9:31:00 AM
Takee Outee was funny. Stop taking yourselves too seriously, people. Laugh a little.
Comment by - Thursday, June 05, 2008 9:47:00 AM
Great way to limber up our brain and learn something too! For those that seem to be offended by #11, get over it. It isn't bashing! What's ironic is that anything goes as long as your "inside" the culture and making the statement. You're just not allowed to do it from the outside. Or even more importantly that you only slur about outsiders to your own group. That sure makes okay, yeah right! What kind of message does that really send?
And what kind of people are we?
Comment by - Thursday, June 05, 2008 10:19:00 AM
I did no find takee outee offensive. How is it a culture can use remarks like that against themselves, but an outsider can not. It was ment to be funny, not condascending, chill out, relax, and stop the hate. I can make fun of myself, can you make fun of yourself? If the answer is yes, why can't someone else make fun of you also? Ever hear of the word hipacritical?
Comment by - Thursday, June 05, 2008 10:39:00 AM
I actually did well! Except the original color of cola, who knew. It's amazing that if a joke about Americans where posted no one would comment, my sister is Asian and thought it was funny because, what Asian says that! Everyone needs to lighten up and stop being so negative!
Comment by - Thursday, June 05, 2008 10:47:00 AM
I learned a lot by not knowing the correct answer. Also discover I don't guess to good either.

I got 11 out of 12 right ... but only because I did not fall for the Urban Legend about Coke. It was never green, sorry, ya'all been punked.
Comment by - Thursday, June 05, 2008 2:04:00 PM
6 outta 12.ya'll just need to chill. you cant really sit there and say asians dont make fun of americans. think about it.

I thought it was interesting, learned alot that I obviously didn't know. Need more of these, they are good for the mind!!
Comment by - Thursday, June 05, 2008 3:41:00 PM
#11- not funny. ignorant. and intention though perhaps harmless, is irrelevant
Comment by - Friday, June 06, 2008 1:11:00 AM
I'll lighten up when I don't have to encounter racial slurs on a regular basis anymore. It's one thing if people make fun of me personally, but when they start disrespecting another country and its people just because they may have an accent while speaking English - that's simply unacceptable. This is not somebody's personal blog. This is an online magazine. The comment is unprofessional and anyone who says "lighten up" clearly has not experienced being discriminated against due to a stereotype. If it's offensive to one person, it's offensive. Deal with it. Stop making excuses.
Comment by - Friday, June 06, 2008 2:57:00 PM
Trust me "takee outee" is offensive and using it was gratuitous. I was shocked to see it there. Otherwise it was a very cool quiz.
Comment by - Saturday, June 07, 2008 9:56:00 AM
the reason "takee outee" is so offensive is b/c it's the pidgin English that historically, colonialists used to subjugate "coolies" (read "East to Eden" or "Fallen Leaves") - it has the sort of connotation that's comparable to making a watermelon/fried chicken joke about African Americans.
I'm sure that wasn't the author's intention tho ... fun quiz otherwise.
Comment by - Saturday, June 07, 2008 5:00:00 PM
the quiz was fun I missed 3. I think coke could sell alot of green in todays world, kids would love it.On #11 people get bent out of shape to easily. or just like to make thing bigger than they are
Comment by - Sunday, June 08, 2008 9:47:00 AM
The Ice water is incorrect. Ice water can be harmful when the body is hot from exercise. drink cool drinks, not iced.
Comment by - Wednesday, June 11, 2008 4:18:00 AM
I was very surprised about the ice water opposed to lukewarm water. I drink Ice water all the time so I'm burning more calories than I thought, That was good for me. the only other one I got wrong was the 345 squirts, I thought it was butter, but I guess you get butter from the milk of a cow :) Good test I knew more than I actually thought I did.

As someone that has lived all over the world in many different cultures, I don't see the big issues. Everybody is different and everyone sees those differences. We are all guilty of saying things like this for fun...everyone. I am from South Louisiana originally...no one is made fun of there right sha? Anyway, don't throw rocks at glass windows and learn to lighten up. I lived in your culture and trust me, when you are 5'8" weighing 140 pounds, your culture is unscrupulous on insults. I can't tell you how many times I have been called fat or madam you are too big to shop here. I just leave laughing to myself knowing there are just different cultures that don't understand the world. Now I can go on to say much more but don't feel I need to as I am completely relaxed in my world and love everyday of my life that I can meet new people from anywhere in the world. By the way, I live in the Middle East now and love it. Again, it is how you chose to live your life and open your mind. If you don't like where you are, leave.

1. Takee Outee is rather offensive, but worse than that, since so many people are offended, the editors are irresponsible for not changing it after so many comments.
2. Celery, Coke and ice water answers, at a minimum, have all been shown to be scientifically inaccurate or urban legend. It's also irresponsible of the editors to not address these issues and to leave these up while they can be easily disproven.
Comment by - Wednesday, June 11, 2008 7:58:00 AM
I missed the pizza answer:( but I noticed that only 2 of those "offended" by the jokes identified themselves. I'm surprised that the support group for Gingivitis hasn't taken offense. Try to smile and take it with a grain of salt.
Comment by - Wednesday, June 11, 2008 8:08:00 AM
The quiz was fun until I read the answers. 1. Coke was never green. A quick google search was apparently not done. http://www.snopes.com/cokelore/green.asp
2. The "takee outee" comment was unnecessary and offensive. 3. ditto on the "time of the month" comment. 4. While ice water can burn more calories you shouldn't drink it when you are overheated.

I missed 5 - love these quizes - works as a big learning tool. Keep them coming.

I loved the survey and would like to see more.
To those of you 'offended' by the different choices of wording in the survey....First of all, lighten up for goodness sakes....and secondly,...so you're perfect? You've never said anything that someone would take as offensive about anyone at anytime, hmm?
Yeah. Right.

I think you all need to step back and take a deep breath. I don't think the author was making fun of any race whatsoever. I think he/she was trying to be funny. Life is too short to get so upset over something so minor as "takee outee". And if you are that offended you need to ask yourself why.
Comment by - Wednesday, June 11, 2008 11:41:00 AM
5 right out of 12.. good to know about the cinnamon flavour in bubble gum, i'm allergic to cinnamon! It was an interesting quiz for sure!
Comment by - Wednesday, June 11, 2008 12:59:00 PM
Didn't anyone read the comments after "Takee Outee"??? It is an actual restaurant, people!
Comment by - Wednesday, June 11, 2008 1:19:00 PM
Cassis has nothing to do with cinnamon; it is, indeed, a flavoring made from the black currant. I have no idea which is used in bubblegum flavoring, but the factoid given in this quiz is certainly ambivalent.

I don't think the author meant to be offensive with the "Takee Outee" comment in #11 -- there was/is an actual fast food restaurant in New Orleans, and I'm sure other cities as well, called "Takee Outee," and this restaurant was owned by Asians or Asian-Americans. Everyone who was "offended" needs to lighten up!
Comment by - Wednesday, June 11, 2008 1:46:00 PM
HELLO?! read the editors note and take the link on #11. there is a reason, people. she wasn't being racist. again, READ everything!
Comment by - Wednesday, June 11, 2008 2:09:00 PM
I do not believe all these 'perfect' people being offended by the Takee Outee reference. I also have eaten quite often by a restaurant by that very name, and it was owned (so obviously named) by people of Asian descent. I agree with all who have a sense of humor...lighten up, people! And I don't know many women who don't crave chocolate at 'that time of the month', either. Sheesh! Just enjoy the quiz, or go elswhere where you won't be offended... I doubt you will find such a place if these two comments got your dander up. GO EDIETS!! YOU ROCK!!
Comment by - Wednesday, June 11, 2008 3:42:00 PM
I got 7 out of 12 right....it was pretty interesting...and fun!!!
Comment by - Wednesday, June 11, 2008 6:28:00 PM
Everyone is too easily offended...and I am curious about the accuracy of some of the answers...I have heard conflicting reports on the "negative calorie" thing with the celery.
Comment by - Wednesday, June 11, 2008 7:03:00 PM
I got all but two correct. I'm a vessel of useless information. Loved the quiz, and number 11 was explained by the writer so get over it, people.
Comment by - Thursday, June 12, 2008 9:52:00 AM
I think using a phrase like "takee outee" and making a reference to "time of month" weakens the authority of the quiz. This is insensitivity trying to pass as humor and just isn't a professional way to do things. Maybe they should hire a grown-up to write the next one?
Comment by - Thursday, June 12, 2008 5:03:00 PM
Nice quiz.
If you don't like that there is an ACTUAL RESTAURANT that the author went to called Takee Outee", perhaps you should get a picket line together and march in front of that restaurant. For the people who wrote they were "shocked", really? That shocks you? Maybe you NEED to be shocked into some common sense, which sadly isn't too comon anymore.
Ms. Wagner also made reference to, shocking again, that choclate might be a craving for women. Menses happens on a monthly (for most) basis to women and comes along with food cravings (for some) that include chocolate.
I LOVED the article, but felt a number of the blog responses were from a bunch of narrow-minded and immature writers.
The world does NOT need to conform to your views, all you wannabe Miss Manners and PC Thought Police!

Thank you, that was fun! I thought they were going to be easy til I got most of them wrong. I learned from the answers...then I ate a piece of celery!
Comment by - Friday, June 13, 2008 6:06:00 AM
I thought the quiz was fun. Everyone may not be in agreeance but hey, you don't have to believe everything your read. So now,I have another question pertaining to food and asians haha. Does the fortune cookie originate from China? Look that answer up and it will give you something else to groan about. Speaking of groaning, I am off to eat some chocoalate. It is the only time of the month I allow myself to have it. :-)

I enjoyed the quiz, although I only got half right. I guessed China because it is so much bigger than Mexico. If Mexico had been right, what would be the Mexican equivalent of your "Takee Outee" comment? Now that's food for funny thought! And how about the other choices?
Comment by - Friday, March 06, 2009 6:58:00 AM
i had 9 correct answers..is that good? Laughed at question no.9 regarding Shawn Mckee ^_^
Comment by - Friday, March 06, 2009 7:31:00 AM
I enjoyed the quiz. I also enjoyed the humor, even #11 and the 'time of the month' shot. People that found those offensive probably don't laugh at anything and find all stand up comedians 'offensive' as well. What a long day they must have everyday. I agree with the Australian, lighten up and crack a smile.
Comment by - Friday, March 06, 2009 1:37:00 PM
I MISSED 3 out of 12 - and was ereally surprosed by the ones I missed!
If people were more aware of whar's going on in the world, they would realize that China has been importing all our "fast food" places at q huge clip - and "Fast food take-out noodles are a way of life in urban China.
Facts are facts ! How can they be offensive?
Comment by - Tuesday, April 07, 2009 6:57:00 PM
HAHAHA I LOVED THE JOKE! VERY FUNNY GUY. WHO REALLY CARES? IF YOU ARE THAT OFFENDED BY IT YOU DISERVE TO BE MADE FUN OF.

If I can be a "WOP" or "Dego" then Takee Outee can be funny. Get a grip, or more accurately, loosen up!! And, actually read the entire explanation before commenting.

Takee Outie isn't funny, even if you hide your lame-ass attempt at humor behind a restaurant name.

OMG!! Read people. What? Only one comment about poor Shawn McKee's breath!!?? Why aren't you outraged at that also?!! If you learn how to comprehend what you read, you will find the quiz was meant to be FUN!! Get over it!!!

Got 9 out of 12 right, got the bubblegum,345 squirts and the doughnut Qs wrong. Answer to 11 was not offensive, don't people have a sense of humor anymore? Read the reference too before posting. (to the author, GO GATORS!)
Also, Cassis(blackcurrant) was obviously an oversight in spelling... the word the author meant to use is Cassia which IS a form of cinnamon.
