Low-Carb Lifestyle: Plan for Success

Whether you work in an office or stay at home, it can be difficult to follow a low-carb diet. You're constantly faced with the temptation to nibble, especially if there's a refrigerator full of high-carb and forbidden treats!

Sound familiar? Want to change your game plan for success? Here are the three keys to a jump-start for your low-carb lifestyle:

1. Plan ahead. Pack a low-carb lunch and some low-carb treats, such as mozzarella cheese sticks, hard-boiled eggs and crispy bacon. Schedule your snack times and meal times, so you have no reason to dip your hand into the snack bag throughout your day. Working from home? Make it a rule to eat only in the kitchen -- and keep that refrigerator off-limits except at your scheduled snack and meal times!

2. When you're tempted to nibble at high-carb foods, do a self-check. Are you really hungry? If so, then keep those low-carb treats on hand so you have no reason to cheat. If you're not really hungry but just bored or in need of a break, try walking around the block or call a friend to chat.

3. Do you use food as a reward for finishing a gnarly project or passing major milestone? Substitute non-food treats, from a new magazine at the bookstore to a long hike with a buddy. Or just get out of the office, be it at home or downtown, by sipping on a cup of no-carb espresso at your favorite coffee house. You can even take paperwork to a cafe and enjoy a low-carb beverage.
