10. If you're trying to lose weight, avoid nuts.

False. Nuts to that! Nuts are full of fiber, healthy unsaturated fat and protein. Because they are relatively high in fat and calories, pay attention to the portion size of nuts, but don't avoid them. They're tasty, nutritious and add flavor and texture to otherwise "boring" foods like salads and casseroles. Walnuts are an especially good source of omega-3 fatty acids, protective against heart disease and cancer. Almonds are high in vitamin E, an antioxidant.

I disagree with this one! bottom line is this: most dieters do not have control. Even though nuts are loaded with fiber and also contain healthy fats, dieters havea tendency to overeat the nuts and end of packing in a minimum of 20-30grams of fat from the nuts alone. We theoretically should not receive more than 25% of our Daily CAloric Intake (DCI)from fats. If one wants to lose weight, then one must know themselves enough to not include items in their diet that may cause them to sabotage their weight loss goals. Remember, its calories in to calories out: 3,500 calories to a single pound!

If fruit juice is so naughty, this is too, but I can't afford them since most of them are $$$$ exceptionally the emails which support them, but I love the discounted ones and generic brands. I know the right kinds of fats are good for you and nearly healthy, but they don't have the LARGE amount of fats like 'real' eggs do.

Thank-you for commenting on my comment, and I am not sure which you don't agree with, but about the nuts, I do consider them very unhealthy, but most consider fruit juices unhealthy and I drink them none the less since I know they are good watered down and I eat nuts since I love them, but I only get what I can afford and since I am on food stamps, its a luxury for me and my meal plan, I try to enjoy all things I love, but when I avoid them totally, then I will eat a lot more of them and so I have to be very careful as all do and I hope to get more nuts soon, but at this time, my finances are not good enough to at this time, but Thank-you for taking time to read my comments, much success with any possible health concerns your having, since I am not looking to experts since my doc and those 'Diabetic' experts didn't help except to make me want to eat much more and see how I was holding back, I am now working on enjoying what I can afford which is as healthy as I can afford, but I take the Vitamins for the others, I think the overall message I am getting from all 'medical experts' is how fat is ALWAYS bad since they preach about trans fat and how fried foods are all horrible, but no one has answers which are for real people, but for those who are starving themselves and when I starve myself, I eat more. I am losing weight, but I know last week when I had stress I had three of the candy bars which was bad, but I was less stressed with myself and now I am getting back to life and although most wouldn't understand, I feel better and I am getting things done which need to be done. I'm sorry this was painfully long.

I have found that nuts are a good food even when dieting. I had been eating 1-3 servings of pistachios daily for a while then quit for a couple months but recently started eating at least 1 serving a day. I found that when I was eating the pistachios I was losing more weight than when I wasn't, that is why I am now trying to eat at least 1-3 servings a day. Pistachios are heart healthy, help lower cholesterol (lower LDL (bad fat) & increases HDL (good fat))leading to reduced risk of heart disease, help control blood sugar, reduce the risk of some types of cancer, provide fiber and protein, help prevent build-up along arterial walls, help to normalise blood pressure, maintain water balance and strengthen muscles.

Pistachios are one of the most nutritious nuts. A one-ounce serving equals about 49 kernals containing only 160 calories and provides more than 30 different vitamins, minerals, and other beneficial nutrients. The are an especially rich source of vitamin e (boosts the immune system and alleviates fatigue), vitamin B6 and the other B vitamins. They are full of antioxidents which help prevent cell damage. They are great for your eyes as then contain Lutein and Zeaxanthin so they can help reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration, the most common cause of blindness in adults over 65.

Pistachios are considered a good snack as it takes time to shell them so it takes longer to eat the 1-3 servings and that helps satisfy the hunger. Pistachios don't add any more calories than eating candy and are better for you.

Pistachios are very yummo, but the media went into the paranoid mode like they did with the Peanut Butter and other things and so now Pistachios are unhealthy since they have E-Cola and Salmon in them and I am sick of the 'FDA' crying wolf so often so I don't believe them and I know they were just as wrong with Bush. I love the Pistachios, but they are not cheap and I used to buy them more often, and the health people try to encourage people to buy the nuts which costs the very most and I am on low income so I just buy what I can afford which are cashews and I haven't heard they are 'encourage' people to buy what are the most expensive.

Honestly, though, if you're dieting you are going to need to learn self control sometime because you can overeat almost anything. Nuts are very nutrient dense and when used sparingly, such as, sprinkled on a salad or as a small snack (they do have 100 calorie snack packs of nuts if portion size is a concern) they're fine. I find that they also satiate my hunger for longer than many other snacks.

Pistachios are very good, which I love to eat very much, and I assume the FDA approved paranoia is over with, but when I go to Dollar Stores, there Pistachios are too expensive so I don't get them since they are in a small container and thats normal since now the media is showing they understand how low income people don't always eat healthy, by saying, they should just spend more money on foods.

General comment; when I try to eat better, I hate the word DIET, since the first three letters are die and I feel I am dying when I am withholding from what I eat what I love, but there are times I can eat healthier foods and not overspend, but its not eat. Eating nuts is not healthy since they taste good and as all 'healthy' foods, you tend to eat more than you should and that helps you gain weight and I don't want that at all. I try to remember losing weight must mean you have to enjoy food much and get less pleasure from it, since this is what happens when I eat as directed.

I find nuts to be a great snack. I just know to count them out, toast them and throw on salads or have them with fruit plate. I always buy fresh nuts in bulk. One can overeat just about anything, no matter how bland or tasty. I love my nuts, plus they are supposedly helping my husband with his cholesterol (I generally make a mix of mostly almonds with a bit of walnuts, cashews, macademia and hazelnuts).

Oh-- I get it. Vern is a joker! The E-Cola and Salmon in the nuts finally convinced me.

I am sorry for the impression I have left that my opinions are more important, but I am diabetic and high blood pressure and I have to watch my blood pressure and the high sodium and that likely applies to other things I am commenting on, I just am grateful for being able to share my views, no one has to agree with others who have posted here, I encourage others to express there views and so this is a good thing.

I have nicknames for things like Pig Flu, since I got sick for 4-5 weeks in 2008 when I got the regular shot and this year I am taking Vitamin D-3 and I was stuffy and such, but I am getting much better in that area. My doctor even agreed with me and for a doc to agree is a major situation for me since most only agree with the taking of drugs. I wasn't sure why people didn't like me at times, but if they don't like me now, its because they don't agree with my views and not because I was afraid to share what I thought, so I know who agrees and who don't, this is a good thing in my opinion.

Really, isn;t it kind of silly putting value judgments like "naughty" on foods? Some are not the healthiest chice, but they aren't wicked, they're just food.

Vern's opinins are just as important as anyone else's. What he has to say could help someone in a similar situation as his. It is important fur us all to think for ourselves: Don't believe everything you read, especially when the "experts" give contrary advice every few years when it's time to contradict their previous research. Get a look at the whole picture from numerous sources and be your own best judge.
