15. Harden fingernails by drinking gelatin.

False. You can't eat your way to hard nails. Although hair and nails are made from protein, so is the entire body composed of protein, collagen and other cellular material. When you eat protein, it's broken down into its component amino acids that circulate throughout the body to be used where needed. If you eat excess amounts of protein, it's stored as -- what else, fat! If you are malnourished, however, your nails, hair, skin and the rest of your body will be negatively affected, of course.

As a nail technician and a student of natural medicine for years, I can tell you that nutrition is essential in having nice nails or hair. However, I will tell you that there are two very important dietary substances that your body needs to make your nails and hair nice and strong and they are biotin and silica. If you have weak nails or brittle hair, try increasing these two natural substances in your diet. You WILL be amazed at the results. And as always, give your body a few months to assess the results, as nutrition isn't like pharmaceuticals. It takes a bit longer to see results, but you definitely will see good results.

I don't expect to find many facts from most 'health' sites since they seem to encourage more expensive foods and taking drugs which have lead to many deaths, but this site is not 100% wrong. I know that NOT all Vitamins I have read great things about have helped my blood sugar and overall health, but help me to sleep better and I get more done, but since most doctors frown on Vitamins 'Supplements' since they want to sell drugs which have killed many. My blood pressure is better with fewer drugs and one Vitamin, I have a nurse who comes once a week, so I am very grateful. When I take Vitamins, I am NOT allowed to eat all I want which is unhealthy, false thinking and I am still working on that, but I don't force myself to avoid all things which I love since I will eat a lot later on. Thank-you for reading this from me.

good quiz. i always thought brown eggs were better. lol i guess i can stop spending the extra $$$ on them now

Comment by Anonymous Anonymous said... - Monday, February 02, 2009 3:02:00 PM

It's not the color of the egg that's responsible for what is inside, it's the variety of the hen that laid the egg. Some varieties lay eggs that are somewhat lower in cholesterol than others. These eggs may be brown, blue, green or white, depending on the hen.

Very informative and removing the mythical ideas which are popularly prevalent.

Very informative and good things to know. Thank you for bringing this information to the forefront.

I did notice that in the summer time when I eat a fruit salad from the vendors my hair and nails grow very fast. I think this should be studied. But as soon as the summer is over and the vendors are gone, my hair starts to get thinner with less volume and body. I think I will make my own fruit salad and see what happens!

Well I got most of them right, a few surprises though. This was a good article, I would like to see more of them. Especially about dietary needs for older folks. I've been told that when you age, you do not process protein as well for your body to use and it is one reason you lose body mass. what say???

Comment by Blogger Vern said... - Monday, March 23, 2009 9:49:00 PM

I like the comment since many Vitamins whether you call them supplements, Vitamins or other names, aren't used as effective as when your much younger so someone who is not anti Vitamin should find out how you can take Vitamins and eat foods to make them do the most benefits for the main reason you took them in the start. I love that someone thought of this, but its best to have the best form of Vitamins and I mean all forms so they give the best results. I know that this is also true for Calcium, but I know it has many other things which apply too.

Unlike these emails, I have no facts to prove this so I would be convinced if the FDA said no since they normally always do whats wrong.

FOUND INFO INTERESTING GOT MOST OF THEM RIGHT. ALSO FOUND TAKING GELATIN IT HELPED BY BRITTLE NAILS. NOTHING ELSE WORKED EVEN EATING PROPERLY

Comment by Blogger Vern said... - Monday, May 04, 2009 5:37:00 PM

I have heard some 'experts' say gelatin does not help at all and others swear by it, but I know I only like the sugar free Gelatin is very good to me and so I hope you continue to have success with this. I know that eating right and the right possible pills can assistant the growing process and thats what I have done with my blood sugar, walking and taking the pills for better blood sugar so I know its help to do both of them. Please give us more update when you can, if you decide to share to do when you can.

I disagree with the answer on aspertame, or any artificial sweetener. I believe these man-made products will eventually have bad effects on the human body. The jury is still out. That's why we go back and forth about it. It is better to stick with small portions of sugar, maple syrup or agave.

Vern, all your posts on this were a hoot and endearing! I am also a cynic with regards to the motives of any type of big agency, government or otherwise. I hope and pray that you continue and succeed in your quest for that perfect balance of health and life enjoyment. God bless!

I agree with the poster about aspartame. My sister is a nurse of 25 years, and had read studies that have found the substance in brain tumors. She bans the chemical from her house. I don't think its wise to have it very often and I avoid it.

Comment by Blogger Vern said... - Wednesday, June 24, 2009 4:29:00 PM

I thought you were saying Asparagus now causes cancer until I realized you meant NutraSweet and then I realized what you meant. I like Splenda and its popular with many, but the one I have loved and heard the most good things about for at least for now, which I love is Stevita and I am careful how much I use since it don't take a lot and since its not a drug, the FDA will find someway to say it will kill me. Many are implying that putting on lots of pounds and getting diabetics is more healthy than zero calories which I have a problem with this since not all people will only drink just water, and they will not drink much, I know many rarely drink anything to avoid all possible bad things for there health, since reports are constantly coming out about there hazards and the media FDA is trying to make us all of us afraid.

Hair and nails grow faster in the summer because of the abundance of vitamin D from stronger sunlight. Also the reason people get ill less in summer months.

Comment by Blogger Vern said... - Tuesday, August 25, 2009 10:12:00 PM

From May to October, the media is wall to wall skin cancer so I don't go out much in the HOT HOT HOT weather and when its more comfy I stay outside more, if I don't have my apartment to clean up for managements sake, but I will take more Vitamin D pills while its hot, but I wasn't out in the heat as much when I was younger and my stepmother was in Florida and had to have some things from her skin removed since she was in the 'Cancer' causing sun. I hate summer for many reasons and this is only one of them, but I know if you don't get skin cancer it will make you healthier. I am not at all against those who want to get sunshine, but I have heard the paranoia about sunshine for many moons.

I thought I knew a lot about these myths. I think I may have gotten one or two at the most correct! Learn something new every day.

Comment by Anonymous Anonymous said... - Wednesday, November 11, 2009 7:50:00 AM

this was great. I always thought that you needed protein to build musles, guess i was wrong.

Comment by Anonymous Anonymous said... - Thursday, November 12, 2009 1:23:00 PM

I strongly disagree that Aspartame is not bad for you. It has been proved to be bad for your health as well as Splenda. Both give me headaches. I think the healthy alternative is Stevia.

If drinking cold water doesn't give your metabolism a kick as it tries to warm your body, then I'm wondering now whether eating spicy foods to get a metabolism kick is also a myth.

Comment by Anonymous Anonymous said... - Saturday, January 16, 2010 8:58:00 AM

Good quiz, you had me fooled on a few of them, i thought cold water would speed up your metabolism which should help you lose weight.I always thought the caffiene in tea and coffee would be equal, i drink yerba mate which has no caffiene but it wakes me up and i feel more alert when i drink it.It is also supposed to be good for weight loss....or is that a myth too!
