8. Doctors recommend taking a multi-vitamin every day.
True. Take your daily multivitamin. In 2002, the American Medical Association (AMA) issued a position statement recommending all healthy Americans take a multivitamin daily. Any brand that contains 100 percent of the recommended daily allowances (RDA) for essential vitamins and minerals is fine.

Most Doctors are not Vitamin fortified since they want to 'encourage' drug use and NOT Vitamins at all, so I am shocked they approve and I have heard multivitamins are less safe.

People have the misconception that if a little bit of a boost is good, in terms of vitamins, then a large boost is great.
If you consume a multivitamin that contains 100% of your RDA values, then anything you eat after that will exceed your RDA values.
This could be dangerous to your health! You could develop a vitamin toxicity. Your body could become sick with an excess of vitamins.
Eating a balanced diet, following the food guide, and making low-fat, lower-calorie choices, and exercising daily are the best things to do to keep you healthy.
Of course, a good multivitamin is acceptable, but not one that gives 100% of your RDA values. Your diet should give you enough vitamins naturally.

This is not necessarily true because most doctors will tell you that if you eat a healthy diet with the recommended variety of fruits and vegetables etc, then you should get all the vitamins you need from your diet. An excess of certain vitamins is not good for the body in most circumstances....

You don't need a vitamin supplement IF, IF you are eating a balanced diet ALL the time. And that is where the myth comes undone because most people do not eat a truly balanced diet even half the time. We eat according to taste which often means leaving out food items that are essential to a balanced diet.
There are other considerations too. For example whether your fruits and vegetables are organic, fresh, and eaten in a manner which retains their nutrient content. Cooking kills off many nutrients. So does storage I think.
Bottom line: taking a multivitmin-cum-mineral supplement every day is an insurance against shortfalls of any or all of these nutrients. And if you habitually leave out certain nutrients because you don't like the foods that provide these, you might be doing yourself some serious damage.

The problem with attempting to get your vitamins with food is that
1. most people don't have access to a very wide variety of fruits, veggies and lean meats. Many sources of protein are not in our diet at all anymore! When was the last time you ate squirrel? Or rabbit?We also tend to eat a lot of the same comfy fruits and veggies as well.
2. much of our food is grown in industrial style mega farms with depleted soil and over-engineered seed, considerably lessening the nutritional value.
