Simple Diet Tweaks: Drink & Lose
Drink and LoseWhen it comes to your waist, the slogan "think before you drink" doesn't just apply to alcohol. One way that excess calories slip into your daily life is through sneaky soft drinks and juices. Most people don't even consider how many calories are in what they drink, and they don't eat less to adjust.

Can someone please tell me why the Diet drinks have to have SOOOO many replacements for sugar? I don't like sugar and don't really like sweeteners but very few DIET alternatives to sugary sodas are sugar less eg. less sweet. Please will someone come up with a lemonade that tastes more like lemons than sugar and cola that isn't so sweet it makes you wince?

Have you tried adding Simply Lemon to bottled water? It contains nothing but crystalized lemon. If you want to add your own sweetner you may.

I agree with the April poster who said add lemon and make your own lemonade. I use real lemons and a little stevia or agave nectar. If you can find Meyer lemons in season, they are a little sweeter than "regular" lemons. I drink lots of water with lemon anyway and don't want soft drinks at all. Sometimes I make iced tea using the above "recipe".

I'm not much of a lemonade drinker, but I make and drink unsweetened iced tea all of the time. It's really simple to make and a lot less expensive than buying soda or diet drinks. All you have to do is fill a pot with water, throw in 10 teabags of your choice (I just stick with the classic lipton black teabags), and boil. When it starts to boil just turn off the stove, remove the teabags, pour into a container, and put it in the fridge. I can't live without my homemade iced tea!

Stevia, which I guess is now being marketed as Truvia, is a great natural sweetener with zero calories. And it tastes good.

I am not big on sweet drinks either, though I have an occasional diet pop in the aftrenoon to suppress hunger pangs.
One thing I did since chindhood for a quick pleasently refreshing drink is to chop half of a sour apple into either tea or boiled water (~2 cups of water). Let it stand for a few minutes, and enjoy! It's fine when cool too.)
You can also take berries of your choice (cranberry, blueberry, red or black currents, sour cherry, strawberries, blackberry, mixed berries), about 6 cups of it and boil it until the berries pop with 2 or 3 cloves and a bit of lemon rind, throw a straining cloth over a colander, drain what drains off, then wrap the rest of berries in the cloth, hang it over that very pot and let the juice drain over night. Then chill and enjoy!
Or you can thicken it a bit with cornstarch to obtain Russian drink called kisel' (dissolve cornstarch, reheat juice, mix in & chill) or add sweetener to taste (~1/2 cup of sugar per 1 litre of liquid for sour berries, less for sweeter ones).
