Nancy R. wants to be remembered by her grandchildren as “crazy Grandma” — the one who was full of life, dancing her feet of at their weddings and living every day full of energy and happiness.
But at 47, Nancy found herself going in the total opposite direction — she was an overweight smoker, with borderline hypertension and a high risk for developing serious weight- and lifestyle-related illnesses.
If she wanted to be thought of as “crazy Grandma,” she knew she couldn’t do it lugging around 50-plus pounds of extra weight! And that was Nancy’s big aha moment. It was time to wake up and make a change.
Like many other people, Nancy had tried and failed on plenty of quick-fix and fad diets in the past — various diet pills, the egg diet, even the grapefruit diet! She said she’d been lazy in the past, eating pre-prepared or boxed meals, ice cream every night, and when she had a craving, she’d loot the kitchen trying to identify what it was to make it go away.
But when Nancy chose the Glycemic Impact Plan with eDiets, she knew this time was different. Her new “diet” consisted of familiar, enjoyable foods she knew she could stick with, and eating smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day kept her feeling satisfied, without overeating!
Once she got going, Nancy lost 20 pounds quickly, which was great, she says, because it became her motivation when the going got tough after that. With that first 20-pound loss under her belt and with the help of the eDiets Community and Support Boards, she was able to stay motivated and keep pushing through!
“Reaching out, hearing others experiences and trying new things that might have worked for them in similar situations” helped her boost her weight loss, she says. “None of us are in this alone!” And Nancy’s definitely not alone… she’s an active member of three Support Boards, and as well as serving as a co-moderator for the eDiets Ultimate Challenge!
The other 45 pounds she wanted to lose didn’t stand a chance after that! Nancy lost with consistency over the next several months and is now an incredible 65 pounds thinner! She’s gone from a size 20/22 to a slim and sexy size 8! See her story in the video, then continue the story below…

Nancy used all the tools at her fingertips to help her — diet and fitness tools like the nutrition calculator and virtual trainer, quizzes, articles, newsletters and success stories (“Cool! These people are REAL!” she says, inspired to keep going by the success of fellow members) all kept her motivated and on track throughout her journey.
Well guess what, Nancy’s REAL too! Real thin and a real powerhouse! Along the way to her goal weight, she’s picked up a bit of a fitness habit! She says she used to complain there wasn’t “enough time” to workout. “Now,” she says, “everyone knows it’s exercise time — just a part of life! I brush my teeth every day, and I exercise everyday… it’s as simple as that.”
She started with just 10 minutes three times each day, and now she’s lifting weights two to three times a week and exercising with DVDs or on her treadmill for up to an hour at a time, five to six days per week! And when she’s not officially working out, she’s chasing those crazy grandkids around!
So what’s it like being 65 pounds lighter, smoke-free and healthier? “I feel like the woman I once was mentally, emotionally and spiritually,” Nancy says. “I wore the extra weight like a heavy, cloudy drape. I feel lighter physically, but in spirit, and heart, too. And that affects everyone in my life! I can’t think of an area of my life that it hasn’t impacted.”

Take it in baby steps. Hang in there and keep at it. It won’t happen overnight, but it WILL happen. Make the changes. Reach out. None of us are in this alone!
Update! Since Nancy’s amazing success, life threw a few ups-and-downs her way and she found herself gaining a few of those 65 pounds back. But Nancy is a fighter (aren’t all “crazy Grandma’s?”), and would not give up on her weight loss goals.
