
Like so many of us, Janet W. is a happily married mom of two boys, busy speeding through life and trying to balance the care of her family with her job and her health. It was at Christmas a few years back when she saw just how out of balance things really were!
Her first shock came when she saw a picture her son had taken. She remembers clearly thinking, “Oh my God! I’m as big as my husband!” “That TOTALLY freaked me out!” she said. But Janet’s big a-ha moment — the thing that ultimately convinced her to take action – didn’t happen until a few weeks later.
During a parent-teacher conference, the teacher was showing some concern because when Janet’s son was asked what his mom did for a living, he responded, “Mommy is fat for a living.” Janet added, “Apparently [he said that] because that’s all he ever heard me talking about.”
Janet came to eDiets from a competitor’s site after she found recipes and other information she’d been searching for on the eDiets Web site. She also knew she needed more support, so once she found eDiets she decided to make the switch! Janet started with eDiets on the Atkins meal plan, weighing in at 216 pounds and wearing a size 18.
Janet immediately got the support she needed to start losing the weight for good. “Every time I encountered a problem or a plateau, I would find a new tool or another board to help me past it, to help pull me through. I wish I would have gotten a mentor when I started; it took me a while to learn all that was available!”

Before joining eDiets, Janet jokes that her exercise was, “Not much. Mostly walking to and from the refrigerator!” She says she was encouraged to try harder and try new things by seeing others, seeing where they started from and what they’d accomplished. She says, “To see other people succeeding really proved to me that it can be done!” And Janet’s getting it done herself! Learning to eat right and exercise more, she’s feeling great.
As the weight came off and Janet grew more and more active, she learned more about exercise and fitness from eDiets Chief Fitness Pro, Raphael Calzadilla. And it didn’t stop there. As Janet’s nutritional needs changed, eDiets was still by her side as she learned to adapt the Glycemic Impact plan into her new lifestyle!
“This has changed more than just me. It’s changed everyone around me, my perception of myself and things that I can and can’t do.” Things certainly have changed. She’s gone from walking to and from the refrigerator, to working out 5-6 days a week, spin class, half marathons…and that’s not all! Since joining eDiets, Janet has dropped an incredible 60 pounds and 5 dress sizes! She’s lost her son’s weight in pounds, and when asked, her son now says, “My mom’s a runner!”
Janet’s approach to nutrition and fitness has certainly rubbed off on her two boys. She says that it took awhile to get the idea of healthy snacks across, but now the boys know that things like cookies, ice cream and fast food are “treats” and once in a while choices, where as things like fruits, nuts, and trail mix are everyday choices.
She shared a story, laughing, “Once my son was at a birthday party when a girl spotted cupcakes and exclaimed “Oooh are those for us?” and another parent jokingly said, “No we thought you’d like carrot sticks instead, who wants carrot sticks?” and my son raised his hand and said “I do!” Everyone burst out laughing, but then when they passed out cupcakes he still asked, “oh so there aren’t carrot sticks?” He ate the cupcakes and enjoyed them, but I’m glad that he has a taste for good foods that will help make his body stronger over the long run.”
