What can I eat for healthier skin?

Nutrition can be skin deep. If you’re like me, anything that can help me look a few — or several — years younger, sign me up! Protecting your skin from the sun and environmental factors is important, and it also helps you retain that youthful glow. Experts state if you feed your skin from the inside out, you can’t help but reap the rewards of looking and feeling better.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, many vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other nutrients can help nourish your skin and affect the way it looks and feels. Here are some of the vitamins, minerals and nutrients that can lead you down the path to a more youthful self!

Vitamin C – Fruits (especially citrus) and Vegetables
Vitamin C helps reduce skin damage caused by ‘free radicals’ (harmful byproducts caused by the environment). These free radicals break down collagen and elastin (which support the skin), causing wrinkles and advancing the aging process.

Vitamin E – Vegetables Oils, Nuts, and Green Leafy Vegetables
This antioxidant, like vitamin C, can help reduce the effects from the sun. We often associate vitamin E with reducing wrinkles. Make sure you are getting the right amount of this vitamin each day.

Omega-3’s – Salmon, Sardines, Mackerel, and Safflower and Flax Oils
These nutrients are important to the production of skin’s oil barrier. If you lack these fatty acids, the skin’s natural behavior is to produce more oil, which can result in additional skin problems. Generally, omega-6’s aren’t a problem to find since they’re in baked goods, oils, grains, and poultry, but sources of omega-3’s may be lacking.

Vitamin A – Fruits, Vegetables (carrots, spinach, red pepper) and Eggs
If your vitamin A levels are inadequate, some skin symptoms might present themselves, such as dryness and flaking. Vitamin A is necessary for skin tissue repair, and if you lack it in your diet, you may notice the results.
