How many calories do I need? — Colleen

Thanks for this question! How many calories do I need? This is commonly asked and most of us really don’t know how much we should be eating to keep our bodies going. Is there a base number for women and men to consume, or is everyone different?

Calorie needs depend upon you and how much your body needs to do its job. When assessing how many calories you need to consume daily, we don’t look at where your weight should be in a year or what activity you plan to do next month – we look at the here and now. Sounds like pressure?! Nah, no pressure. All it means is that calorie needs are based on information about you: age, gender, current weight, height and exercise levels – your individual diet profile. These factors are needed to accurately assess an individual’s calorie needs, and they are assessed based on a scientific equation.

Since 1200 calories per day doesn’t fit everyone’s profile, we can calculate your calories for you. In general, it is recommended for women to not consume below 1200 calories (1600 calories for men). Don’t forget calories are important to fuel your body. Getting too little can essentially starve your system, and consuming too much can lead to excess weight gain.

Whether you are a man, women, 6 feet tall or shorter, it’s important to be on a meal plan that looks at your individual factors and activity level as well as your goal of losing, gaining or maintaining weight.

How do you really know what the right number of calories are for you? I have been eating an average of 1200 calories a day, taking a bootcamp 3 days a week, which is an hour of class that kicks your behind, hike 10-12 miles on Saturdays, and one evening lift weights with a personal trainer and have yet to lose 1 pound. I have been doing this for 7 weeks now and the boot camp instructor just tells me that I must not be writing down everything I am eating… but I am!! So, what gives??

Hi Kathleen, the amound of calories your body needs depends on your weight, height, gender, age and activity level. We can help you figure that one out…..it sounds like you are one active person – good for you. As for the calorie level, depending on your calorie needs (based on the info I mentioned above) it may be that you aren't eating enough….believe it or not. Most of us think that less is more, but if you aren't eating enough based on your activity level, your body might be holding on to some fat so it doesn't go into starvation mode….sometimes adding a few more calories (100-200) will do the trick to speed up your metabolism and work with your body to burn fat. Email us at nutrition@ediets.com and we can help figure your calorie level and give you some pointers. talk to you soon!

According to your chart I need 1600 calories, but how many fat grams?

  • Kathleen

I am 49 years old, weight 170, female, and according to the last body fat test I had done I am 36% fat. I and 5'6″ and wear a 12-14 misses size. I carry my weight all over..

the instructor at the boot camp looks at our food journals and the one comment I get is that I need to eat more veggies. I generally have 1 – 2 servings a day.

I would appreciate any help you can offer
    thanks

Good for you for logging your food and doing the boot camp! fantastic. If you are eating 1-2 servings of veggies a day, you can boost that up a bit and increase more to about 2-4…..reason being is that non-starchy veggies will provide nutrients you need as well as not add too many calories (low calorie food). Keep it balanced with lean protein, fruit, and whole grains! keep us posted. contact nutrition@ediets.com for any questions. take care
