I’m going on vacation. How can I eat and stay on track?
One more road trip before the fall? Flying to see the family? Any destination can work when it comes to healthy eating.
Even though vacation is often synonymous with overeating or putting on a few pounds, it doesn’t necessarily have to be that way. For those of you going on a vacation –- regardless of the length -– as long as you keep your meals balanced and practice the general healthy eating rules, you shouldn’t have any worries. Enjoy your time. You deserve it.
If you’re able to print some of your eDiets meals and recipes to make while you’re gone, that’s an easy way to stay right on target. But for many of us who are going to places where a kitchen or prep area might not be available, here are a few of my suggestions to keeping the pounds away while enjoying the time off:
• Pack as many food items or snacks you can. A cooler, purse and bag are simple items that are easy to take in a car. If it’s a road trip, fill that cooler with water, fruit, cheese sticks and drinkable yogurts; bag up some 100-calorie low-fat snacks, pretzels, rice cakes, trail mix (nuts and dried fruit) — the more snacks you bring, the less likely you’ll pick up something on-the-go that isn’t as healthy.
• Pick meal-friendly places. Choose places that have healthy menu options (grilled or blackened items, salads, fresh vegetables, whole grains) to pick from. Opt for places that have a variety of items instead of places like a fried food joint. This will enable you to pick foods that can provide a balanced meal, such as grilled salmon, brown rice with vegetables and a side salad.
• Remember your dining out rules. Skip those appetizers (or enjoy one as a meal instead); split a dish; share the dessert with the family and enjoy a bite or two; limit or skip items in that bread basket they serve; pick the vegetables or salad as your sides; and drink plenty of water.
• Remember balance. Keep your plates full of vegetables, a serving of starch and lean proteins. Enjoy your fruit and low-fat dairy servings for snacks.
• Drink, Drink, Drink! Keep hydrated (have to mention it again), especially if you are doing a lot of walking in the heat or traveling by air.
On your vacation, make the most of the time with your family, friends or just yourself. (I would love some of that time!). Make it the best you can and remember to feed your body good!
