Ask Pam: Late-Night Eating

Should I stop eating after 6 p.m.?

Is there a magic time to stop eating? Well, I would love to say that if you stopped eating at a specific time, you would hit your target weight faster…but it simply isn’t true. Remember the old statement “Calories in verses calories out”? That holds true in this scenario. It isn’t so much about the time that you eat but about the foods and quantities you consume.

Don’t get me wrong. For some of us, eating after a certain time at night can influence our meal plan or weight-loss goals, but generally that’s because many of us graze or munch on foods that tend to be of low nutritional value and are added calories. You can’t blame us sometimes — we tend to eat a little more when we’re home relaxing, watching television or feeling a little bored.

Take me for instance — my day is jammed-packed. Often, I don’t eat until late in the evening. But it works for me because I still eat 5-6 small meals/snacks and have spread my calories out throughout the day. I have balanced each meal in; it’s included in my total calorie intake for the day. As long as you aren’t exceeding above your calorie needs, your meals are balanced and you keep moving (exercise), the time that you eat shouldn’t be the cause of weight gain.
