Take a good look into your fridge and cupboards. If you find stuff you don’t remember buying in the first place, chances are that it’s time to clean everything out.
You shouldn’t be like a raccoon ravaging for food in a dumpster; knowing which foods you have in stock and getting rid of the unhealthy ones is essential for weight loss. Here are some tips to help with rearranging your cupboards:
1. Throw out trans fatty foods: You’re already familiar with some common foods that contain trans fat – donuts and French fries – but there are a few that might be floating under your radar. Potato chips, cookies and baking mixes can all contain this unhealthy fat that can hurt your heart, so make sure you read food labels and chuck any of the bad stuff.
2. Check expiration dates: The majority of items have a shelf-life; most non-acid canned foods (beans, potatoes, etc.) can last up to two years while high-acid foods (tomatoes, fruit juices) have a shelf life of about 12-18 months. If you can’t remember when you bought the items and it doesn’t have an expiration date on it, throw it out.
3. Stock up on these healthy, tasty foods: Stick to whole grains (pastas, breads and cereals), low-fat foods and snacks (soups, fruits and rice cakes) and fat-free condiments and dressings (mayonnaise, etc.). It’s easier to eat healthier and control cravings when there are only good foods within reach.
