Healthy Dining Restaurant of the Month: Jack in the Box

Sure, they built their fame on burgers, and indeed, they are among the nation’s largest hamburger chains. But today, Jack in the Box is serving up everything from grilled chicken options to smoothies, from Teriyaki Bowls to a Chicken Fajita Pita made with whole grains. So if you are on the go this summer and need to grab a quick bite, this popular fast-food establishment has much to offer the health- and weight-conscious.

I love burgers…and Jack in the Box certainly doesn’t disappoint in this area! Their delectable Hamburger Deluxe will satisfy your taste buds and not add to your waistline. The combination of a juicy hamburger patty and bun with lettuce, tomato, ketchup, and a bit of mayo-onion sauce hits the spot for that burger fix –  all for just 360 calories. What more could you ask for?

That is impressive for a delicious burger and will make you forget you are on a diet! Providing 15 g protein and 2 g fiber, you can always skip the mayo-onion sauce (replace with mustard) to reduce the overall fat and calories. Add a side of the Fresh Fruit Cup (50 additional calories) for dessert!

If you prefer a lighter lunch, Jack in the Box has just the right meal for you. Order the refreshing Grilled Chicken Salad (includes Grilled Chicken Strips on a blend of iceberg, romaine and spring mix, assorted vegetables, cheese, croutons with low fat balsamic dressing) for just 360 calories, a hearty meal with 31 g protein, and 5 g fiber. You can even reduce the calories and fat a bit further by skipping the cheese. The dressing and croutons are served on the side, too, so you can monitor how much you want. Your stomach won’t notice (it tastes that good)!

Now for those of you looking for something a bit more substantial than a salad but not a burger, try the Chicken Fajita Pita. I have to admit – fajitas are my thing – this will have your mouth watering, too! It is loaded with chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, grilled onions and cheddar cheese wrapped in a whole grain pita (4 g of fiber!). Jack in the Box really outdid themselves here at just 320 calories! You can also add their fire-roasted salsa to spice it up. Who says eating healthy isn’t tasty or filling?
