We all know that fruits and vegetables are healthy for us. But that doesn’t mean we all know about every choice out there. While apples and oranges are fantastic options, sometimes you need to mix it up a little.

Take the kiwi (also known as kiwifruit). When was last time you had this exotic nutritional powerhouse? If you say “never,” let’s learn a little more about why kiwi is such a healthy choice.

The green fruit with a fuzzy exterior packs a powerful nutritional punch. In fact, Rutgers University conducted a study of the 27 most popular fruits, and among all of those, they named kiwi the “most nutritionally dense.”

Here are some of the many benefits of kiwi:

-Kiwi gives you an entire day’s worth of vitamin C
-It contains potassium, which is good for thwarting high blood-pressure, among many other things
-Kiwi contains the antioxidant-rich vitamin E, and lutein, which helps promote good vision
-Like most fruits and vegetables, kiwi is a low-calorie treat, with just 50 calories on average for each
-Kiwi more fiber than apples and twice the amount of vitamin C as an orange
-A study found that kiwi can boost your body’s natural defenses, improve muscle performance and digestive health, and reduce cell damage and inflammation
-Kiwi helps reduce damage from free radicals, which lead to diseases such as cancer
-It’s great for protecting the body against colds

So, next time you are in the produce aisle, look beyond the standard choices, and seek out kiwi. There are plenty of ways you can eat kiwi: in fruit salad, as a yogurt topping, in chutney, and on its own like any other fruit.
