Cheers To Beer!

Like the post?  Add Your Comments  |  Digg This Post!  |

Nowadays, beer is not just made to satisfy fanatics of Monday night football or St. Patrick's day festivities. It is no news that society today is more health conscious than ever before. This is why beer makers are continuously looking for ways to produce a product that has as many health benefits as wine, if not more, when consumed in moderation of course.

Who would have ever thought that beer can be loaded with B-complex vitamins, antioxidants and cancer-fighting benefits? So, does this mean it is “ok” to have a beer belly? Not exactly, but at least we know now that there are beer options out there today that have more benefits other than giving you a buzz and making a great shampoo!

Count The Alcohol?

Like the post?  Add Your Comments  |  Digg This Post!  |

Since the beginning of 2004, there has been an ongoing battle between the United States Treasury Department's Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) and the UK-based Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WTSA). The cause of argument: whether or not alcoholic beverages sold in the United States should contain nutrition information. The US Treasury Department feels as though this change is long overdue as Americans are becoming more concerned with serving sizes as well as the health risks that are associated with alcohol consumption and abuse.

Okay, so let's break down alcohol consumption and caloric intake so you can decide for yourself. Moderate drinking is defined as no more than two drinks per day for men and one a day for woman. That means that five ounces of wine will give you an average of 114 calories, a beer provides around 148 calories, and one shot of tequila, brandy, vodka, rum, or cognac will give you about 96 calories.

Plus, let's not forget to mention the additional calories when you mix these liquors in popular drinks like rum and coke which jumps from 96 calories to 160 per cocktail. Now, let's assume that you enjoy three to five drinks per week for one year; that small number leads to an increase of 5-10 pounds, all in the form of useless calories.

Most consumers probably would make smarter choices if they knew that those drinks will equate to an additional 31-62 hours of moderate bicycling, 46-93 hours of brisk walking, or 25-50 hours of lap swimming. The good news is that we don't have to wait for decisions to be made by departments we have never heard of. You are now empowered with the information so you can make your own decisions about how important alcohol is and how it fits in with your weight loss goals. I challenge you to choose wisely!

This puts extra calories nicely into perspective when you define how much exercise it takes to get them off. The worst thing about calories from alcohol, besides the added weight, is that they do not contribute anything in terms of fueling the exercise needed to get rid of them.

Alcoholic beverage is an evil and addicted drug. It cannot make any brain healthy.

In addition to the extra calories from the alcohol, drinking often leads to mindless munching too.

I'll drink to that!

60 hours a year of additional biking equates to an additional 10 minutes a day - how awful - cheers!

its too bad but the urge to drink is at the root of many weight loss failures

'The worst thing about calories from alcohol, besides the added weight, is that they do not contribute anything in terms of fueling the exercise needed to get rid of them.'

I completely disagree! For most people I know, a night of drinking includes lots and lots of dancing! If not a lot of walking too... A lot more exercise than sitting at home on a friday night.

Just drink your dinner, then you don't have to worry about it

I'll drink to all of the above!

Holiday Beverages Abound! Take Caution!

Like the post?  Add Your Comments  |  Digg This Post!  |

All alcoholic beverages from eggnog to champagne add empty calories to your diet. We all know this is true. During the holiday season there are many social gatherings and celebrations with our friends and family. Unfortunately, many turn to alcohol to help with anxiety and shyness when attending these parties. Some even believe they interact better socially when they have had a few drinks.

Dr. Gail Saltz says, “There is nothing wrong with a drink or two. In fact, there are health benefits to a little alcohol.” But she also warns that one or two can turn into three or four very easily. We need to remember alcohol is a depressant so it really does not help your mood; it depresses the nervous system. It may relax you in the short term but as your tolerance increases it will take more and more and that can result in addiction.

Some great tips? Have some water in between each glass and eat your dinner. Most of all, try not to overdo it!

I hope you have a great holiday season!

Ruptured Bladder?? Ouch!

Like the post?  Add Your Comments  |  Digg This Post!  |

Yes, a ruptured bladder is yet another reason why we should cut back on alcohol consumption. Reports indicate that more and more women are binge drinking and this is leading to complications that were previously only seen in men.

What exactly are the complications involved with a ruptured bladder? According to the article, alcohol dulls the senses to the point where you may not “go” when you should. The constant pressure can make the walls of your bladder thinner. Eventually, this can cause it to rupture and leak (leak urine, that is)...I can't imagine that this would feel very good!

So ladies (and men), let's take care of ourselves and use alcohol wisely. Your bladder will thank you!

Do You Even Know You Are Drunk?

Like the post?  Add Your Comments  |  Digg This Post!  |

With all the new stress of school and life, university students are now using energy drinks to keep up with academics; although, that is not all they are being used for. These energy drinks are being used are mixers for alcohol and becoming the newest trends in cocktails at night clubs.

For example, I visited Peru recently and they are using Red Bull in cocktails and martinis served at restaurants and bars. Some have said and consider these mixtures dangerous. Should we be concerned? Do we need to go as far as regulating energy drinks just like everything else?

For starters, the combination of alcohol and energy drinks hides the effect of slurred speech and sleepiness when someone is inebriated. Therefore, you do not know if someone is drunk or not. That can become dangerous if you drive, continue to drink and become impaired to the point that you might not know what you are doing.

For some of us that use energy drinks in cases of extreme fatigue, please be aware that moderation is the key. You are getting three times as much caffeine as a regular cup of coffee. You also want to make sure that consumption of these energy drinks does not interact with other medications you are taking. Finally, these drinks may also affect your sleeping patterns and you will be more tired the next day.

As always, too much of a good thing can't be that good!

Drip-Feed of Vodka STAT!

Like the post?  Add Your Comments  |  Digg This Post!  |

Imagine this scenario. You are a doctor in a hospital and you have a patient suffering from poisoning. You are successfully treating this patient, but all of a sudden the only supply that can inhibit the toxic effects of this poisoning runs out. What do you do?!

Well, this very situation occurred in an Italian hospital. The poisoning was caused by ingesting antifreeze and the treatment was pharmaceutical-grade alcohol. So, what did the doctors use instead? Vodka! These are my kind of doctors!

I won't be surprised if we see this on an episode of House or ER...
