We know about the benefits of breastfeeding for things like ear, stomach or intestinal infections, digestive problems, skin disease, allergies and cost. Well, now we can add heart disease to that list.
That's correct, breast-fed children were found to have higher HDL levels (good cholesterol) and a lower BMI (Body Mass Index) when compared to bottle-fed babies. The study looked at 962 people, average age of 41, taking part in the long running Framingham Heart Study.
This is an important step in our efforts to reduce the obesity epidemic. In our quest to find the secret of weight loss, youth and incredible looking skin, one thing comes to mind, breast milk!

Breastfeeding Saves Lives
Like the post? Add Your Comments | Digg This Post! |Breast feeding is not simply a form of good nutrition for a new born, mother's milk can literally save lives. An infant's weak and developing immune system can get a big boost by it’s mother's milk. Through the introduction of mom’s milk a baby develops antibodies and a series of productive proteins. Introducing mother's milk within the 1st hour of birth significantly strengthens an infant's immune system. The World Health Organization says that “If babies breastfed within the first hour, 1 million lives might be saved.”Respiratory illness, diarrhea and other common medical conditions easily treated in the western world, can prove fatal in less developed countries. And, even here in the U.S. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that only 31 percent of mothers exclusively breast-fed their babies for at least the first 3 months compared with the target of 60 percent. Some woman express concern over their appearance if they did breast feed. Health organizations worldwide have clearly outlined that their figures clearly show improved health and well being as a result of breast-feeding.

Nursing. How long is too long?
Like the post? Add Your Comments | Digg This Post! |There's no doubt that breastfeeding infants has its benefits. Few people will disagree with this. However, a topic that does bring about more debate is the amount of time that women choose to breastfeed. How long is too long?
Although most mothers don't nurse their children after their first year, there is a minority of women who do so beyond the year and then some (until kindergarten?).
To each his own, I think...but there are people on both sides of this issue who have more to say...

I agree to each is own, yet nursing mothers judge mothers who choose not to nurse and vice versa. I think if we are all able to respect each other's choices there wouldn't be so much controversy regarding the breastfeeding time line.
Breastfeeding may not lower risk of obesity in children
Like the post? Add Your Comments | Digg This Post! |This debate has been raging from sometime whether or not breastfeeding has any effect on a child's weight later in life. There are so many protective benefits for breastfeeding your children but results from this U.K. Research team took me by surprise. It seems that other qualities by women who breastfeed such as education level socioeconomic status are the contributing factors to reduced risk of obesity in children and not necessarily breast milk. I can see where some of these factors can play a role in obese children. However, I hope it does not deter women from breastfeeding their children because there are so many other protective benefits from this practice. Some include: providing antibodies that protects babies from illnesses, allergies and having higher IQs.

"We are all measured by inches, ages, numbers and all the outside things that don’t add up to who we are on the inside. So let your weight loss journey be one of self-acceptance every step of the way. If you are unhappy with yourself fifty pounds heavier you’ll probably feel the same way when you lose the weight. Happiness is not embedded in outward appearances. "
