Would You Like to See a Therapist or Send An E-mail?

Gone are the days you had to make an appointment to see a psychologist. You can also forget the dreaded leather couch sessions...no longer needed. All you need to do is send your therapist an e-mail or set up an instant messaging session.

It is not for everyone, especially if you need the human contact and the face-to-face time. However, if you are busy and don't mind talking to your therapist via computer, this new method of therapy will save you time and provide anonymity. It will also force you to organize your ideas and get to the point quicker. According to the Journal of Clinical Psychology, more men tend to participate in on-line sessions versus traditional therapy, which is mainly dominated by women.

But do not think that just because it is on-line it is going to be cheaper than your regular face-to-face sessions. Oh no, it will cost you the same, but you will still get a resolution to your dilemma in shorter sessions and that in the long run can translate into savings.

Like I said before, these on-line sessions are not for everyone, especially those who are very depressed or have suicidal thoughts. It is just another alternative to traditional therapy. You always have the option to see a real person, but if you are shy and rather express thoughts through your computer then you may consider giving it a shot.

Substituting the Therapist’s Couch with a Computer

In this day and age, technology is so present in our lives that more professionals are turning to it as a way to assist others, even if it means not seeing your therapist in person all the time. Last year, Britain’s National Health Service endorsed two Internet programs designed to help people with phobias, mild depression or panic attacks. One of them is called Fearfighter and it is as simple to use as any other on-line membership you may have.

For those getting psychiatric counseling, this alternative is as easy as logging into the site with their username and the password (provided by their general physician) so they can access the program on-line. This is an option for those that want the anonymity or privacy that “computer therapy” can provide.

Still, the program is not authorized to prescribe any medications; you will need to talk to your psychologist about that one.

Fearfighter is based on more than 20 years of development and has been tested comprehensively in a variety of clinical trials showing that those using this kind of therapy had as much progress as those counseled by therapists face-to-face.

Web of Lies

Like the post?  Add Your Comments  |  Digg This Post!  |

With the Internet being a part of practically everyone's life nowadays, it's become easier and easier to resort to the Web for advice on pretty much anything. Heck, we don't even need to speak to real people anymore. We can do our shopping, read a newspaper, and even lose weight!

Now, the danger lies in how we use this information. People are going on-line to diagnose themselves and to find cures for their diseases and ailments. If you've ever done this, I'm sure you can agree that there's a lot of wacky (and scary) stuff out there.

Following a few guidelines can help you find your way through the clutter. And, of course, seeing your doctor should always be on your list of to-do's if you have a health concern.

Happy searching!
