Milk: To Drink or Not To Drink?

There is a website called notmilk.com, which reports dozens of articles preaching the evils of milk. One of the most controversial claims is that the milk from cows contains cancer causing hormones covered up by ”dairy industry dollars.” Even the most faithful milk drinker has to have a little doubt.

Well, a nutritionist has done research, sifting through all the pros and cons of milk, and during which she has found some very compelling evidence. A 6-month study done at the University of Tennessee has shown that overweight people who drank three servings a day of calcium-rich dairy lost more belly fat than those who followed a similar diet without the dairy servings. The research also indicated that the calcium supplements did not work as well as milk.

Yes, cows are given hormones to aid in milk production, saving the farmer money which is then passed on to the consumer in supermarket savings. However, the hormone used will not affect the milk unless it is directly injected because the digestion process destroys it.

The take home message? Before you decide not to drink milk, make sure you get all the facts and base your decision on full story.

This is a great article. I do not like milk and often am concerned about not drinking it. I do like and drink almond milk. Can I get the same health benefits from the almond milk?

Is this only true for dairy or does Soy "Milk" have the same or some benefits?

For me, I don't drink milk & tend to stay away from dairy because I notice that when I drink/eat it, my sinuses get clogged up. (I used to have a cat, & when I stopped drinking milk, I was much less allergic to him).
To the other commentator, Almond Milk has loads of benefits - just google it, there are lots of health websites totting it's goodness.

I don't think you'll find that Almond milk has the same benifits (I was vegan for years and after much reasearch and experimenting I decided againsts that life style).

ok I do drink milk but was wondering if I should drink no fat, low fat, 1 o/o, 2 o/o, etc. ?If I drink the 1o/o am I getting all the benefits as a whole milk?

My husband drinks about 2 - 3 glasses of 2% milk per day and has a very large belly. I personally do not believe that drinking milk helps you lose belly fat. Also, almond milk is definitely better than cow's milk. Cow's milk is hard for humans to digest, so goat's milk is better. You can get your calcium from other sources such as broccoli. I do not drink milk at all, but I do take a calcium supplement and incorporate alot of broccoli and other fresh vegetables into my diet.

Soo.... Do we drink it or not? I've lost 60 pounds in 1 year from drinking milk, but I dont want to drink it if it's dangerous.. I also dont like milk, but adding low fat chocolate syrup makes it possible to consume the necessary amount of calcium. I really do want to know if fat free or whole milk is better for you, because I drink fat free. I've heard that there are not enough nutrients.
Either way, I thought your article was the answer to those questions, but it turns out we still need to research questions we may have. What was the purpose of your article?

I use to not drink milk thinking its not natural for humans to drink animal milk. Also the use of harmonal vaccienes on animal adultrates it, but then i realised milk for my body is natural cause i am consuming it since i was 1 year old. our body adapts as we are raised, so natural is subjective.

Just drinking a liquid doesn't cause a person to lose weight, not a pill, not a potion, not a single entity. Fact is, there are a lot of natural sources from Mother earth that provide a healthier dosage of calcium. Fact is, Milk is mucus and most if not all disease come from some sort of mucus build up. You are what you ingest. We must stop misleading people for the sake of saving a farmer money.
