Certain additives that are not approved for use in farm-raised seafood in the United Stated and are prohibited by Chinese authorities are still intentionally being used by farmers in China. The FDA has taken a step and banned catfish, shrimp and eel until importers can prove the seafood is free from chemicals that are potentially carcinogenic. These chemicals are mainly ones used to treat fungal infections. Although levels of contaminants are low, they could cause serious health problems over a long period of time. Shrimp and catfish are 2 of the top 10 most consumed seafood products in the US. Boy, I think becoming a vegetarian is becoming more and more appealing by the minute!
