Hall of Shame: Scary Sandwiches

The Hall of Shame honors the worst of our guilty pleasures — unhealthy food. Here are this week’s nominees:

A complicated, multi-stacked mess
A disgusting meal/snack that my husband had invented is called the Perfect Popcorn Pocket Sandwich. It is: one bag of Heavily Buttered Microwave popcorn (pref. Orville Redenbacher’s Movie Theater Butter Popcorn with pour over butter); one pack Cinnamon Graham Crackers (approximately eight); a half bag of marshmallows; an immeasurable amount of Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup; an immeasurable amount of Chunky Peanut Butter; and held together with Reddi-Wip. Four graham crackers are glued together with peanut butter, marshmallows and Reddi-Wip, topped with popcorn (butter over half a bag of popcorn), lots of chocolate syrup and a scoop of peanut butter — to be topped with four graham crackers. Add remaining ingredients to the top of the crackers. Must be rinsed down with a diet soda though!!!!

The worst of all — school lunches
Here are some sample meals that would make anyone’s waistline bulge. Beef fingers, (strips of beef battered and deep fried) instant mashed potatoes with gravy, a large biscuit, green beans, and a fudge bar. Another one is chili-cheese dog, seasoned fries (chili and cheese optional on these), pears in heavy syrup and a brownie. Where did I get these? Not from a local restaurant but instead from the menu at my child’s school. Is it any wonder that we have a childhood obesity problem? We really need to be watching what our children eat as well as how much activity they are doing each day.

PB & mayo on multigrain bread
My roommate makes peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwiches. He makes them on 12-grain bread “so they’re healthy.” He thinks adding iceburg lettuce makes it better, too. Not as bad as an old boyfriend who used to make bologna, salami, cheddar and pickle sandwiches on white bread with Ranch dressing, topped with a layer of microwaved tater tots.

Sister a whiz with the microwave
When my sister and I were little, she made up this concoction to satisfy all of her cravings. She mixed a handful of chocolate chips, cereal (nothing fruity), threw in some marshmallows and a few spoonfuls of peanut butter into a bowl. After nuking it until the mallows grew as big as they could, she mixed it all up and began snacking. This looked disgusting to me, but I tried it and years later I am still making this when I can’t quite satisfy my hunger or cravings.

Dad taught us what was acceptable
My dad told me when he was growing up in the Netherlands, he used to make a treat by getting two slices of bread, spreading some lard on it, then adding a chocolate bar. This is the same dad who taught me and my sister that toasted bread with butter and chocolate sprinkles was an acceptable breakfast food. Occasionally, peanut butter would replace the butter resulting in a Reese’s peanut-butter cup-like sandwich.

You’ve got your chocolate in my sandwich
When I feel like making a bad sandwich, I take two pieces of white bread and toast them. Right when they are done I slather peanut butter on both slices and strategically place a Hershey chocolate bar in the middle. It is great and filling. But likely not the best choice.

These kids knew how to eat
My brother and sister had the worst after-school snack habits possible. My brother loved to cook up a pan of fried bologna. But my sister was much, much worse. She had a whole menu of bad choices… White bread slathered in syrup! A bowl of Dream Whip, eaten with a spoon! And the most horrifying of all, a bowl of butter and sugar (brown or white, take your pick) mixed together to creamy perfection!! I usually stuck to buttered popcorn after school, not a perfect snack, but I think I would have to say the healthiest of the lot. Where were my parents???
–Deborah

Cucumbers in a lemon brine
Squeeze five limes into a drinking glass, shake tons of salt into it (really, you need like 5 tablespoons to make it good), and swirl with cucumbers. Dip cucumbers and eat. When cucumbers are gone, drink remaining ‘sour lemonade.’ I would love to still eat/drink this but I think I might bloat to the size of my house. –M.

My brother used to eat and I think still does, peanut butter and Ketchup sandwiches, Disgusting!!!

He would very lightly toast white sliced bread like 6 slices, spread each one with a heap of peanutbutter and in the center of the top one add a huge dollop of ketchup, dip the other 5 slices into the ketchup and enjoy, then eat the very last one with both heaps of peanutbutter an ketchup!!!!!!!!!

This used to be my favorite, even as an adult. Bologna on white bread with Miracle Whip, processed American cheese and Pringles potato chips. It satisfied 4 major cravings – salt, sweet, cheese & fat.

My boyfriend loves to take large bites of nougaty chocolate (Milka Noisette) while he is eating a sandwich with e.g. mayo, ham, pickles and cheese in it… :S

  • In the 70s

In college I tended bar at a steakhouse that served a free relish tray before every meal so we always had an abundance of the relish tray items available for the employees to eat. That is how I came to LOVE liver pate mixed with sour cream herring and corn relish. My favorite sald with this meal? Well, three bean salad mixed with beets and blue cheese dressing, of course! I still love AND eat theses combos.

A great after school snack for my best friend and I was a Bologna sandwich(oscar meyer), on white bread(wonder),with lots of mustard and mayo(best foods),two slices of american cheese(kraft), and lots of dorito’s nacho cheese chips layered in sandwich with a huge jalapeno pepper to bite into after each bite of the sandwich. It all went down with an ice cold dr pepper. Best after school snack ever!

I have a few horrible sandwich combos I haven’t seen in the ‘Hall of Shame’. My brother used to fix toast smear it with peanut butter topped with slices of banana and dill pickles. Gross! however when I was in school my favorite after school snack was 2 slices of white bread smeared with ketchup and sprinkled with dehydrated mince onion (or sometimes raw onion if we had it). The first time I saw my husband eat his favorite sandwich my stomach lurched. He loves grilled cheese sandwiches with a fried egg on them, the catch? The egg yolk is soft and runny and when he bites into he yolk he starts slurping and licking all over his sandwich. Now he has my youngest broher hooked on them. Disgusting!!

I love the peanutbutter and mayonaise sandwiches – I sometimes add dill pickle slices and a slice of american cheese – yummy!

I still love peanut butter and strawberry jam sandwiches with Dorittos strategically placed in the middle of the sandwich. Sounds weird, but delicious!

When I was a kid I used to love to take a sourdough sandwich roll and layer it with alternating layers of thick cut provolone cheese, BBQ potato chips, and BBQ sauce. I'd do like 3 or 4 layers then smush it all together as flat as i could get it and dip it in more BBQ sauce between bites.

They used to make this in a church I used to go to when I was a child, at around 1988, for fund raising! About $3 a piece:
    - Take a whole potato.
    - Cut in half.
    - Place a cheese slice and SPAM!
    - Dip it in batter
    - Fry

It was called a "potato sandwich".

I can't imagine eating this again.

My brother's creation was sugar sandwiches. Slightly moisten two slices of white bread and add white sugar and voila! My fav was and sadly still is raisin bread, salami, american cheese and mustard. Sounds terrible but is really delicious!

Take 2 slices of bread (white, wheat, 12 grain)then toast and slather with real butter and marshmallow fluff! mmmm! And a sandwich fed to us growing up was a brown sugar sandwich. 2 slices of white bread buttered and filled with brown sugar. Of course both were served up with a healthy big ol' glass of whole milk.

i think the worst is yet to come, this is a bolivian sandwich that everyone would get after longs night before arriving home….would hold u throught the weekend with enought calories…
it is a sandwich with a deepfried breaded steak,TWO fried eggs, tomate, onions,a LOT of cooked rice, some boiled potatoes anf some thick french fries, some sweet peppers and green chile, ketchup, mayonaisse and sometimes a little mustard….and PLUS! for some extra flavor you could order this with cheese over all….
and guess the name of this…”TRANCAPECHO” which mean TRANCA=stuck PECHO=chest….
probably a good name, because it is dificult just to open your mouth with such thing, it is reeeeeally dry and a heartbomb…anyway to see this…too much to handle…
i would take a bite and leave the rest to my hungry friends..(sorry 4 my bad english though)

    Eek… That's ONE sandwich? Wow!

This probably isn't quite as bad, but makes me wonder how my family's longevity is so outstanding! My family (both Mother's and Father's side) will slather butter all over both slices of bread when making a sandwich. ANY kind of samdwich. Fried bologna with mayonnaise was always a favorite—don't forget to apply a generous coating of butter to the bread. It keeps it from getting soggy, you know. PB&J? Fine, just add the butter first. Tuna salad, egg salad, ham cheese and mayo…BUTTER FIRST!

I used to microwave frozen burritos, stuff nacho cheese Doritos inside & then squirt ketchup on it. It was delicious, but It scares me to think how much fat was in that.
