Irish Burnt Oranges
Ingredients
½ medium orange (see instructions; will need to peel before halving)
1 Tbsp. white wine
1 tsp. butter
2 tsp. sugar
¼ cup orange juice
1 tsp. Whiskey, warmed
Instructions
Carefully peel orange thinly, leaving pith and white on orange; save peels. With a sharp knife, remove as much of the white skin as possible, leaving orange intact. Cut peel into thin strips and cover with wine. Place orange half into oven safe dish, top with butter and sprinkle with 1 tsp sugar. Bake for 400F for 10 minutes or until sugar caramelizes. Meanwhile, bring the orange juice and remaining sugar to a boil in saucepan; lower heat and do not stir; mixture should get syrupy. Add orange peel and wine and bring to a boil; allow to slightly thicken. Remove orange from oven and pour warmed whiskey; you can set alight, over heat to remove excess alcohol. Add orange syrup as flames die down and let simmer 2 minutes. Serve warm or cold.
